Workshop in Anogi Ithaca for the protection of biodiversity, geodiversity and sustainable development

On Friday 6 September, the Argostoli Branch of the Management Unit of the National Parks of Zakynthos, Ainos & Protected Areas of the Ionian Islands and the UNESCO World Geopark of Kefalonia-Ithaca managed by NECCA co-organized with the Local Group of Anogi a workshop in Anogi Ithaca entitled: "Protection of biodiversity and geodiversity in Ithaca: Perspectives for sustainable development", with the participation of numerous citizens and visitors from all over Ithaca. The event was honoured with the presence and greeting of the Prefect of Ithaca, Mrs. Smaragda Sardeli and the President of the Local Community of Anogi, Mr. Panos Moraitis.

The participants had the opportunity to attend interesting speeches by the speakers, with various topics, such as the protection of the night skies of Greece by Mr. Andreas Papalambrou, President of the Greek Branch of DarkSky Greece, the history and the churches of Anogi by Archaeologist Mr. Gerasimos Livitsanis, about the history and the churches of Anonis, about the actions of the World Geopark of Kefalonia-Ithaca after its proclamation, by the Geologist of the Geopark Dr. Elena Zoumbouli and about climate change and biodiversity by Professor of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Mr. Antonio Mazaris.

The participants had the opportunity to visit the headquarters of the Kefalonia-Ithaca Geopark, at the Cultural Centre of Anogi, where there is a rich collection of printed and digital material, as well as a permanent exhibition of fossils from the Geopark. The event ended with an astronomical observation, where the participants, including many children, had the opportunity to admire the planet Saturn and other constellations of the night sky.

The Natural Environment & Climate Change Organization (NECCA), which is responsible for the protected areas of the Ionian Islands and for the Geopark of Kefalonia-Ithaca, through its participation in national and regional European programmes as well as with its own funding and in close cooperation with the Municipality of Ithaca, has highlighted the area of Anogi as the new "core" of alternative tourism on the island.

NECCA would like to thank all those who contributed to the successful organization of the event.
