The 1st "Kefalonia Stay Active" organizes an excursion on Saturday 23 September 2023
The Management Unit of the National Parks of Zakynthos, Ainos & Protected Areas of the Ionian Islands, on the occasion of the 1st Stay Active Kefalonia 2023 events, is organizing a bus excursion on Saturday 23 September 2023 at 8.30 a.m. (Meeting point: Indoor basketball court "Antonis Tritsis") in the most important protected area of Kefalonia, the National Park of Ainos, where the excursionists will admire the unique island forest of the Kefalonian Fir (Abies cephalonica), which dominates the area and is the only occurrence in the Ionian Islands. The National Park of Ainos has been classified, at an international level, as a European Biogenetic Reserve, part of the UNESCO World Geopark of Kefalonia-Ithaca & Dark Sky International Park. It has also been included in the European Ecological Network of Special Areas "Natura 2000" and in the network of Special Protection Areas of the European Community for the protection of avifauna. The hikers at Chionistra (next to the antennae park) will observe the habitat of Viola cephalonica (Cephalonian Viola or Menexes). Viola cephalonica is the rarest plant in Kefalonia, as it is found only on the highest peaks of Mount Ainos, on rocky substrates and rock crevices. Afterwards, hikers will walk along the main path of Aenos from the Chionistra site to the Aenos Environmental Centre (1-1.5 hours). Finally, the excursion will end with a picnic at the Central Park of Ainos where the Unit staff will distribute a light lunch.
